ADA25 Celebrated in Connecticut!

Celebrations of the 25th Anniversary of the ADA were held across Connecticut this summer with more planned into the fall.  ADACC, the Connecticut affiliate of the New England ADA Center, provided sponsorship and support to six events.  Each event was unique but all provided an opportunity for participants to sign the ADA Pledge!  Numbers are still being crunched but more than 500 pledges were signed!

West Haven/Milford Joint ADA 25 Committee co-hosted three events.  The first was with the City of Milford on July 6th.  It opened with the singing of the National Anthem, and a Proclamation read by Milford Mayor Benjamin Blake. The ADA 25 flag was raised up high on the flag pole where it will remained for the month of July. Participants were treated to music, and an ADA 25 Anniversary cake, ADA balloons and information booths. Participants also lit wish lanterns for the ADA.  The Committee’s second event was with the City of West Haven on July 23rd at the Savin Rock Conference Center during the popular Savin Rock Festival, attracting tens of thousands of folks.  The ADA Flag was raised and Mayor Edward M. O’Brien read a Proclamation. In addition to cake, a picnic and entertainment, Members of the public of all ages (with or without a disability) had an opportunity to try adaptive cycling on some recumbent bikes and to have their picture taken with a mural/screen of the official 1990 signing of the ADA by President George H.W.Bush, Justin Dart and others.  And then, on August 9th, an event geared toward children, young folks, and their parents was held at Bodie’s Place Boundless Playground in Milford. It featured a demonstration by the Gaylord Wheelchair Tennis Team, a picnic, entertainment, face painting and animal balloons.

The next event, at the 34th Newington Extravaganza on July 18th, was one of two events hosted by the Connecticut Cross Disability Alliance.  The second was an educational event with the City of New Haven that featured a walk/roll through of downtown New Haven with a discussion about architectural barriers and filing complaints followed by a discussion at the New Haven City Hall.

Finally, the City of New Britain celebrated at their annual Abilities Walk and Roll.  Participants in the one mile walk received T-Shirts and refreshments and, prior to a concert in the band shell, Mayor Erin Stewart, read a proclamation.  With cake, clowns, jugglers and ice cream sundaes, it was a festive event!

Happy Anniversary ADA!
